1But it was a great evil in Jonah’s eyes, and he trembled and became furious. 2And he prayed to Jehovah, and said, Please, O Jehovah, was this not my word while I was still in my own country? On account of this, I fled to Tarshish before, for I knew that You are a gracious Mighty God and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and One who is moved to pity regarding inflicting evil. 3And now, O Jehovah, please take my life from me. For it is better for me to die than to live. 4And Jehovah said, Is it right for you to be angry? 5And Jonah went out from the city and sat to the east of the city. And there he made a booth for himself and sat under it in the shade until he should see what would become of the city. 6And Jehovah God appointed a plant, and it came up over Jonah to be shade over his head, in order to deliver him from his misery. And Jonah rejoiced over the plant with great joy. 7But God appointed a worm early as the next day dawned, and it struck the plant, and it withered. 8And it happened when the sun rose, that God appointed a scorching east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he fainted; and he begged for his soul to die. And he said, It is better for me to die than to live. 9And God said to Jonah, Is it right for you to be angry over the plant? And he said, It is right for me to be angry, even to death. 10Then Jehovah said, You have had pity on the plant for which you did not labor, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night; 11and should I not have pity on Nineveh, the great city in which are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between the right and the left hand, and many cattle?
