1A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scorner does not heed rebuke. 2By the fruit of his mouth a man shall eat well, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence. 3He who watches his mouth keeps his life; he who opens his lips wide shall have destruction. 4The soul of the sluggard desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. 5The righteous hates lying, but the wicked one is odious and acts shamefully. 6Righteousness guards the one whose way is perfect, but wickedness subverts the sinner. 7There are those who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing; and those who act poor, yet have great riches. 8The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor does not hear rebuke. 9The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. 10By pride comes nothing but strife, but with those who deliberate is wisdom. 11Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished, but he who gathers with the labor of his hands shall increase. 12Hope postponed makes the heart sick, but when desire comes to pass it is a tree of life. 13Whoever despises the Word shall be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment shall be rewarded. 14The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn away from the snares of death. 15Good understanding gives favor, but the way of traitors is ever flowing. 16Every prudent one acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly. 17A wicked messenger falls into evil, but a faithful ambassador is health. 18Poverty and shame shall be to him who ignores correction, but he who heeds reproof shall be honored. 19The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to turn from evil. 20He who walks with the wise will be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. 21Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous, good shall be repaid. 22A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is treasured up for the just. 23There is much food in the cultivated land of the poor, but when there is no justice, it is snatched away. 24He who withholds the rod hates his son, but he who loves him chastens him promptly. 25The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked shall lack.
